Beloki on that fateful day in July

Former ONCE star Joseba Beloki's plans for next year are still up in the air, after an intense round of negotiations with the new Stayer team collapsed Tuesday.

The Spanish sports daily Marca reported Wednesday that Beloki and his attorneys failed to reach final agreement with the new Spanish/Italian road team after ten days of discussions. The 30-year-old Spaniard and his lawyer Pablo Arregui closed off negotiations with the team and left Italy disappointed after failing to gain assurances on many of his financial and staffing demands.

The team was reportedly unable to make salary guarantees that Beloki required, nor could officials commit to signing an array of other riders the former Tour runner-up wanted to fill out the squad. Beloki reportedly wanted a team that included Mikel Pradera, David Plaza and his brother Gorka, as well as several others, before committing to Stayer.

"I think that the team's offer was a good deal for me, less good for other people," Beloki told Marca. "Everyone will benefit in the end because I made my decision taking everything into consideration."

The question now is which team may sign the man who - until his disastrous crash - posed a serious threat to Lance Armstrong's successful attempt to lock-up his fifth successive Tour de France victory this year. During negotiations, Beloki denied reports that the Saeco team had made an offer. The German Gerolsteiner squad has also reportedly been considering an offer.

The Swiss-based Phonak squad had expressed an interest in signing Beloki earlier in the year, but has since signed both Tyler Hamilton and Oscar Sevilla.

Beloki has found a team

Spanish cycling star Joseba Beloki has found a team for 2004, and will announce it on Thursday, November 13, European time, according to a report in AS. The team will not be a Spanish squad, and Saeco, Gerolsteiner and Lampre have been named as the strongest candidates. Beloki recently called off a deal with potential new cycling team Stayer, after it didn't pay its bank guarantee in time and couldn't assure participation in the 2004 Tour de France.

Beloki's manager Pablo Arregui confirmed the news to AS, but would not yet name the team. Beloki will be presented with his new team in its own country, as well as in his home town of Vitoria, Spain [Ed: presumably not at the same time].

With Saeco already having solid leaders in Gilberto Simoni and Danilo Di Luca, it's being speculated that Lampre (Casagrande) and Gerolsteiner (Rebellin) are the most likely destinations for Beloki. In addition, he will take his brother Gorka with him to the new team.
