Beloki pulls the plug on Stayer
After extensive negotiation, Joseba Beloki has ended discussions with the Italian electrical firm Stayer to join a new team planned for 2004. Beloki, who was Stayer's pick as team leader, called off the deal, dissatisfied with Stayer's financial guarantees. Along with his lawyer Pablo Arregui and former professional Abraham Olano, whom Beloki had invited to join as directeur sportif, the former ONCE leader traveled to Italy to meet with Stayer representatives, but ultimately went home empty handed.

While Beloki is reported to have interest from teams such as Gerolsteiner, Saeco, and Alessio, those teams may not be as interested as Stayer in hiring his entire entourage of ex-ONCE men. Beloki's preference was always to continue riding for a Spanish team, but it appears his options now remain international. In fact, Beloki denied any link to the Italian Saeco team. "I don't have anything from them," he told the Spanish paper Marca. "That news came out because people want to discredit Stayer."

"We came with all the hope in the world, but in the end we couldn't reach an agreement," Beloki said of the Stayer proposition. "I think a contract like mine is complex enough. In sporting terms it was the most attractive project, with Abraham [Olano] and several riders in whom I have confidence, but it was necessary to take everything into account."

No Go for Stayer

Joseba Beloki has ended his negotiations with the Stayer Company, having decided that it could not give him the necessary financial guarantees. Abraham Olano, who is lined up to be the Basque rider's next sport director said that although Beloki had travelled to Italy with the hope of joining the company, "we have verified that it has failed to make payments to its basketball team and the company is not in a good financial state.”

Stayer

This confirms our news roundup assessment of November 4th when we reported:

“The Italian machinery manufacturer Stayer, who are interested in sponsoring a new cycling team to which Beloki and Olano are linked were recently in the financial papers - "Milan, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Italian machinery manufacturer Stayer said on Friday auditor Deloitte & Touche had declined to sign its accounts for the first half of 2003 on concerns over the company's turnaround plan. "The firm believes that the uncertainty (over the turnaround) can be overcome with a capital increase, which a shareholders' assembly has been called to debate on Oct. 24, 27 and 28," Stayer said in a statement.

"Stayer had net debt of 3.4 million euros at the end of August 2003."

Olano continued to say, “We cannot take part in a project that does not have guarantee of continuity both economically and from the sporting viewpoint. It is a big disappointment because we thought we might be able to start work soon.”

Olano, is now recommending that Beloki " finds a team as quickly as possible since the start of the season is not far away and it will soon be time to start preparatory work and getting to know new team mates".

Beloki must now weigh up other possibilities and Olano does not discard the chance that Beloki may return to Saiz: "That is question between the two men. They had a tense situation but we shall see. The sooner it is decided better and the other riders who are involved also need to know what is happening as quickly as possible.”

Joseba will meet tomorrow with leaders of the Saeco team. Although there offer was less financially attractive than Stayers they have a solid reputation in the cycling world . However if Beloki were to go to the team of Martinelli, only two riders would be able to accompany him ( his brother Gorka and Mikel Pradera ? ) and possibly Abraham Olano. It would also mean that Saeco would be able to mount to mount a double Tour challenge - Simoni for the Giro Pink and Beloki for the Tours yellow.

Also rumoured to be interested in the services of Beloki for next season are the Gerolsteiner team.
